Building Inclusion with Quality Assurance

3-week cohort-based, experiential learning course developed for the Eduflow Academy in 2023. The course was project-based, leveraging social learning to understand how implementing a quality assurance rubric in organizations can improve inclusion and accessibility.

The Concept

In early 2023, I partnered with Eduflow (since acquired by Multiverse) to create a course geared towards instructional designers and other learning and development professionals. The course Building an Inclusive Quality Assurance Rubric was specifically for decision-makers and instructional designers who wanted to improve their organization's inclusion and accessibility efforts.

The course was cohort-based, community-driven, and project-based. Learners provided and received anonymous peer feedback and direct feedback from me. I also led optional live weekly recorded sessions. By the end of the course, learners built their own custom quality assurance (QA) framework to help drive progress and maximize inclusion for their learners and the organization as a whole.

The Process

Eduflow generously offered to host the 3-week course utilizing the Eduflow LMS. As I had taken previous courses within the Eduflow Academy, I was already familiar with the front-end of the Eduflow LMS. I quickly got to work learning the back-end as a course administrator.

My passion for this course stemmed from my obsession with quality and data and my dedication to inclusive learning environments. I knew that I wanted to focus on not only the benefits of implementing a QA system for consistency but also the opportunities to systematically embed inclusion, diversity, and accessibility into their learning products. I approached this by first focusing on the return on investment (ROI) for organizations to ensure a higher chance of buy-in.

In building the course, I logically split it up into 3 focuses for each week. In week 1, the main goal was to learn how to gain support for an inclusive quality assurance initiative. Week 2 focused on integrating inclusion and accessibility into existing QA processes and continuing to gain support for the inclusive quality assurance initiative by identifying potential obstacles and devising strategies to overcome them. In the final week, learners select measurement criteria relevant to their organization, review several types of training rubrics, and build their custom QA rubric.

As Eduflow is an intuitive, drag-and-drop LMS, creating lessons was very straightforward. I created images and additional downloadable student materials within Canva and Microsoft Office. I used Mentimeter as a space for students to collaborate and share knowledge. Weekly sessions were held and recorded in Zoom.

"In Bela’s course, she’ll meet you where you’re at, offering up foundational ... DEIAB principles... as well as... HOW to do so. She facilitated the course with consistency, flexibility, and an authentic interest in the thinking of her learners."

The Result

I've created a Building Inclusion with Quality Assurance course preview using Articulate Rise. Try it out for yourself!

Clicking on the previous link or the image will redirect you to a freestanding course preview. To return here, click the back button in your browser. Or if you go through the entire course, the exit button at the end will redirect you back to this portfolio project page.

I've also renamed the course from Building an Inclusive Quality Assurance Rubric to Building Inclusion with Quality Assurance. This new name aligns with the Building Inclusion series of courses I am building. Stay tuned!
