The Concept
This project began as Articulate E-Learning Challenge #337, which invited designers to experiment with the then-new 360° image feature in Storyline 360. I used the challenge as an opportunity to explore how an immersive environment could support language learning rather than simply showcase a new interaction.
Using a panoramic image of Bastia, Corsica, I created an exploratory activity that allows learners to discover Spanish and Esperanto vocabulary within the environment. It was my first project using a 360° image, and I wanted the interaction to feel like discovering language in context rather than moving through a traditional vocabulary lesson.
The Process
I began with a panoramic image of Bastia and designed a set of customized markers, lightboxes, and audio interactions within Storyline 360. Each marker connects an object or location in the environment with relevant vocabulary, allowing learners to explore the scene at their own pace.
Because I have experience with both Spanish and Esperanto, I selected vocabulary that could be naturally connected to visible elements in the scene. Esperanto was an especially fun addition because its international roots and intentionally accessible structure fit the broader idea of learning through exploration.
I recorded the audio directly in Storyline and used the combination of visual context, written vocabulary, and spoken language to provide multiple ways for learners to engage with each term.
The Result
The project was selected by Articulate’s E-Learning Heroes community as a featured e-learning example and was later incorporated into Articulate training materials: Using 360° Images in Storyline 360. What an honor!
The finished experience demonstrates how immersive media can turn a simple vocabulary activity into contextual, exploratory learning. Learners can move through the environment, choose what to investigate, and connect written and spoken vocabulary with objects in a real-world setting.
