Command Line Interface with Terminus

Technical training to onboard new Pantheon users on how to work with Terminus Command Line Interface (CLI).

The Concept

During my time at Pantheon Platform as a Technical Instructional Designer, I was tasked with building courses to onboard new customers. Onboarding new clients helped acclimate them to the Pantheon Platform while saving time for customer and technical support engineers.

Terminus is Pantheon's Command Line Interface (CLI). In plain language for folks who aren't web developers: a CLI is the dark screen you see depicted with code. It's a barebones application where you can type in commands. For those who are really old school (raising my hand here), it's like MS-DOS!

The Process

I started by reviewing all of our existing documentation for Terminus. This included video training, technical documentation, and presentations on Terminus delivered to clients. I also looked into any blog posts and articles written about Terminus, as this is a great way to view comments, concerns, and quick tips that may be missing elsewhere.

I then chose the Pantheon-branded assets to incorporate into the video and included some B-roll videos throughout the course. Technical training can easily overwhelm learners, especially when they don't have an aptitude for the product. It's also difficult at times to pay attention while consistently seeing lines of code on a screen. Bonus: involving video offers the opportunity to include diverse characters and shift the stereotypes away from the usual demographics of web developers.

I used Canva to build some of the imagery, including icons and animations. The video was edited using Camtasia. For the audio, I recorded my narration in Audacity and then added it to the video in Camtasia. Be sure to check out my other voiceover projects in my portfolio!

The Result

As a front-end web developer and longtime computer nerd, this course was a lot of fun to build! My experience with coding and computer software also came in handy as I worked to put together the training in a way that served both newcomers and experienced clients.

As technology rapidly advances, so do technical and learning resources! Several Pantheon courses I've built have since been updated to reflect product changes. At the time of creating this portfolio project, the Command Line Interface with Terminus course was still being offered publicly. I've included a video of module 2 of the course here.
